Gujarat Ayurved University was founded in 1967 through an act passed by Gujarat State legislative Assembly in 1965. The university is accredited with an A grade by NAAC. It is known to be the first statutory university exclusively for ayurvedic studies and research both at national and international level. Gujarat Ayurved University is administratively linked to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. It is an autonomous university fully financed by the Government of Gujarat. 

Gujarat Ayurved University currently offers programmes at undergraduate, graduate and doctoral levels. Some of the popular Gujarat Ayurved University courses include B.Pharm in Ayurveda, PG diploma in Yoga and Naturopathy, PhD in Medicinal Plants & Ayurvedic Pharmacy, MD/ MS in Ayurveda, Certificate Course in Yoga & Natural Therapies, etc. The Gujarat Ayurved University fee ranges from Rs 10,000 to Rs 50,000 per year on an average. The GAU admission is merit based. For some courses, the scores of the qualifying exams are taken into consideration for admission. For others, there is an entrance test followed by an interview that the university conducts. 

GAU looks after the management of the affiliated and on-campus institutes and colleges along with conducting the examination of all the degrees/diplomas. Gujarat Ayurved University has three wings taking care of the management and functioning, including exams of all the degrees and diplomas and related activities. The Gujarat Ayurved University campus consists of all important facilities for students and staff. Some of them include the library, smart classrooms, canteen, activity hall, playground, etc. 

Gujarat Ayurved University offers assistance to students to fund their studies through scholarships and grants. Gujarat Ayurved University scholarships are given to students with excellent academic records. There is also another category of scholarships exclusively for the reserved and backward categories of students. The scholarships are funded by the central government or the government of Gujarat to promote ayurvedic education not just in the state or nation, but the world as a whole.
